ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA. Genet Denboba Ogeto, Miss Earth Ethiopia 2009, is all set to represent the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, the oldest independent country in Africa in the international Miss Earth 2009 beauty pageant. Genet's participation to the environmentally-conscious pageant was confirmed by the organizers of Beauties of Africa, Inc., the franchise holder of Miss Earth Ethiopia. Genet comes from Ethiopia's capital city, Addis Ababa. She is 22 years old and works as an international model. She stands 5 feet and 10 inches (178cm). Ethiopia has the second largest population in Africa and has been hit by famine many times due to rain shortages and depletion of natural resources. Genet explains that "the growing population in Ethiopia is increasing the deforestation." As the population continues to grow, the needs of the people increase. "My country has lost 98% of its forested regions in the last 50 years," she adds. Genet states that "Ethiopia was covered with about 30% of forest in the late nineteenth century." The clearing of land for agricultural use and the cutting of trees for fuel gradually changed the scene, and today forest areas in Ethiopia have dwindled to less than 4% of its total land. "Deforestation in Ethiopia is due to locals clearing forests for their personal needs, such as for fuel, hunting, agriculture, housing development, and at times for religious reasons," she says. “In my city, Addis Ababa, we are in the process of launching the Ethiopian Forestry Action Plan (EFAP) to improve woodland conservation, increase public participation in reforestation projects, and prevent further depletion of existing forest resources,” she remarks. She declares that she will use the Miss Earth pageant as a vehicle to raise the current environmental issues that Ethiopia stumbles upon. "Our greatest power to move forward lies in the minds, hearts, and hands of the people, each acting as a champion for conservation and a cleaner environment." she concludes. Do you remember me? I'm Laurence, the french journalist who made in 2008 a report for French television about the model contest in Addis Ababa, chaired by Lionel Dejean.
I know that nothing happened afterwards and you have all been very disappointed. I'm really sorry. I can imagine many dreams and hopes were broked. You certainly have something to say about that. The TV show, Envoyé Spécial, offers some suites to our stories to give news from people who saw before. Would you be Ok to receive us once again and tell what happened after the competition ? Did you travel for model's show or not, when, where, by whom? One of you did she realized her dream of being a model ? Are you kept in touch with Lionel Dejean (it is not my case!)? I woul like also to join Akbaret, but I have no email address for her. Perhaps you are in contact with her - can you send her my message? I hope you saw the tv story ... We sent it to Girum for you. Akbaret, Genet, and Selamawit, you appear...
