Kota Kinabalu: The environment must be taken seriously and this is what former Unduk Ngadau Madelyne Nandu will stress when participating at the "Miss Earth" pageant in Boracay Island, Philippines, on Nov. 22.
Beauties from more than 90 countries will be taking part.

The recent Physics-for-Education Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) graduate expects a tough fight, especially where testing contestants' knowledge on environmental issues is concerned.

"It is not only beauty that will be judged but also our intelligence. I will fight to the end. But at the same time, I will not forget to promote Malaysia and Sabah.

"Even if I do not win, I will still continue with my struggle on enhancing environmental awareness especially in maintaining beach cleanliness," she said.

Madelyne, who is also KK City Waterfront Ambassador until October, next year, said Sabah had great potential with its beautiful beaches from Kota Kinabalu to Semporna.

"If we do not care for cleanliness of our coastal beaches, then we will be giving a bad name to our city and tourists will spread the word which could affect our tourism industry.

"Public awareness needs to be enhanced so that people will not simply throw rubbish into the sea," she said.

Madelyne also said she picked a Kelantanese costume for the national costume category. "I chose to wear a traditional costume known as 'Cik Siti Wan Kembang' with its huge head gear embedded with sparkling beads, accessories and decorations plus long shawl and 'songket' garment.

"Although I chose to showcase the Kelantanese traditional costume which is also one of the national costumes in the country apart from 'baju kurung' I am still a proud Kadazan and Sabahan," she said.

"The design of the costume will have a mix of traditional and modern elements like the normal size of the headgear would be bigger and the shawl would be longer," said Madelyne.

Nonetheless, she would still be wearing the Kadazan traditional costume in cultural activities to promote her identity.

Madelyne recently won the Miss Malaysia Model of the World in Ipoh, Perak in July and the Miss Malaysia Earth in the same national contest.
